The bucket for dry toilet

If you are here, it means you have already made your choice between dry toilets and chemical toilets: the planet thanks you for it.

If not, we invite you to take a look at our comparison of camping toilets.

And now, you are wondering which bucket for dry toilet to choose?

If you choose our dry toilet, no questions to ask, we impose our choice on you!

But if you want to build your dry toilet yourself, you are right to ask the question about the type of bucket for dry toilet before constructing your toilet because the dimensions of the bucket are important to design the perfect toilet to accommodate them.

The ideal dimensions of the dry toilet bucket

What volume to choose?

You can imagine, the ideal volume depends on the number of users.

Yes, your dry toilet will need to be emptied frequently, but the larger the bucket, the less often you will have to empty it.

For 1 to 2 users, we recommend a minimum volume of 15 liters, which corresponds to an autonomy of 3 to 4 days.

For 3 users, a larger bucket will be needed, around 20 to 25 liters.

We have therefore chosen a 21L bucket for dry toilet to cover the majority of uses.

But since we do not know the frequency of your digestive system, we will talk to you more concretely.

A 21L bucket will provide you with an autonomy of 30 to 40 uses. We let you calculate the equivalent in number of days based on the speed of your own transit!

So be careful, if you make your dry toilet yourself, remember that the diameter of the hole in your seat/lid must be smaller than the diameter of the bucket to avoid "missing the bucket".

What material for dry toilet?

Another existential question when it comes to dry toilets, you might say!

Indeed, even if we add a compostable bag, it is preferable to opt for a high-quality bucket because unfortunately, we can sometimes face a problem of uncontrolled projection (and yes, it happens even to the best!) or simply to facilitate and make the cleaning of the bucket possible.

The chemical properties of urine can degrade certain materials (PVC plastics, galvanized steel, ...).

Thus, we recommend choosing a food-grade plastic bucket (our choice) or stainless steel. We discourage the trend of wooden buckets that will not withstand long against organic waste.

Stainless steel or food-grade plastic bucket for dry toilet?

At first glance, the stainless steel bucket is much more appealing. It seems more durable and sounds more eco-friendly compared to a plastic bucket.

As a reminder, stainless steel (commonly referred to as "inox") is a steel composed of more than 10.5% chromium, which is an extremely corrosion-resistant alloy. Discovered in 1912, it has since been widely used outdoors or in humid environments.

But no, even though stainless steel is more durable, the ecological indicators are not all green when it comes to its carbon footprint.

For the price of the stainless steel bucket, it also loses the battle.

On the contrary, the food-grade plastic bucket, sufficiently durable (you don't stand on the bucket when you do your business) will cost you less to purchase, is recyclable, and will perfectly serve its role as a container for dry toilet.

Very importantly, the plastic bucket has a lid that makes the entire bucket airtight, which is a significant advantage for sports transport.

What is the best bucket for dry toilet?

For dry toilets, a food-grade plastic bucket with a capacity of 15-25 liters will cover the majority of uses.

A lid to close the bucket will secure the whole in case of jolts. Easy to transport, cleaning the dry toilet bucket is done easily.
